Copyright notices and takedowns

The database on this site — weapon statistics, patch history, map and mode records — is researched and written by us, and is covered by the copyright policy.

This page is about the other kind of material: images uploaded by registered contributors to the community wiki. We do not choose, commission or review those before they appear. Each one is recorded against the account that uploaded it and the licence that account asserted, and each one can be reported by anybody.

The fastest route is the Report this file link on any image page. You do not need an account, and reporting takes the file offline immediately, before a moderator has looked at it. If it turns out to be fine it goes back up; if it does not, it stays down and is deleted from storage.

Use that link if you can. The formal notice below exists for when you want to make a statutory demand, or when the material is not a contributor upload.

A designated agent has not yet been published for this site. Until one is, send copyright concerns through the contact pageand use the report link on the image itself — reporting still removes the file immediately. This notice will be replaced with the agent’s details once the designation is registered.

For a notice to be effective under 17 U.S.C. §512(c)(3), it must include all of the following:

• Your physical or electronic signature.
• Identification of the copyrighted work you say has been infringed.
• Identification of the material you want removed, and enough detail to let us find it — the page URL is ideal.
• Your address, telephone number and email address.
• A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the rights holder, its agent, or the law.
• A statement that the information in the notice is accurate and — under penalty of perjury — that you are the rights holder or authorised to act for them.

Deliberately misrepresenting that material is infringing can make you liable for damages under §512(f). If you are not sure whether you hold the rights, take advice before sending a notice.

We will tell the uploader what was removed and why. If you believe the removal was a mistake or a misidentification, you may send a counter-notice under §512(g) containing your signature, identification of the removed material and where it appeared, your contact details, a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe in good faith it was removed by mistake, and your consent to the jurisdiction of the appropriate federal court.

If we receive a valid counter-notice we will pass it to the complainant. Unless they tell us they have filed a court action, the material may be restored in 10 to 14 business days.

Accounts that repeatedly upload infringing material lose the ability to upload, and are blocked from the wiki entirely in serious or deliberate cases. In the ordinary course an account reaches that point after 3 upheld copyright reports, though a single clear-cut case of commercial infringement is enough on its own.

Moderators can see an uploader’s record of upheld reports at the moment they decide a case, so the policy is applied rather than merely published. Every moderation decision is written to a log with the moderator’s name against it.

Contributors are told plainly, at the point of upload, not to upload the game’s promotional art, imagery lifted from other sites, or anything else they do not hold the rights to. A screenshot somebody took themselves is fine; Activision’s artwork is not, and we remove it when we find it, notice or no notice.
